In our continuous digging for good house music we came across a group called “Lovebirds”. Not to be confused with “The Lovebirds” which by doing some further researched is linked to a movie or something. No, this is not that. This is a gem in house music history.
In 2008 Lovebirds released the maxi single “The Rat”. A three track project featuring two different versions of the title track “The Rat”. One of the mixes was done by Kreon. Then we have a third track titled “The Sound”.
For just three selections this is a potent production of deep house music.
With the lead off being the “The Rat” (original) it kicks off with a serious tone. The rubber band bass line creates a sound of mystery and urgency. The strings bring a soundscape that gives this more forward motion with dips and rising peaks. Some select chime effects to go with the cosmic touches. The lite use of cow bell to enrich the drum package was done nicely. A little goes a long ways.
With the way this was all composed you don’t even realize the song is 7:56 long. We put this joint on repeat for about half an hour then switched to the Kreon remix, but before we get to that let’s talk about the middle track.
“The Sound” is not as pulsing as “The Rat” and it didn’t need to be. Matter of fact, it was a good break in between the other two selections. “The Sound” didn’t throw you so far off from the energy that you just couldn’t get back in the mode for the Kreon remix.
“The Sound’ is definitely good chill music that would fit nicely at a upbeat cafe, but not to soft that it wouldn’t make for a good selection for a DJ at a nightclub. After hours comes to mind.
Lastly we have “The Rat” (Kreon) remix and this has some accents that the original does not. The synth pieces give it a slightly different feel from the original. The keys and synth give it more of a voice without any vocals. Kind of how a jazz track with it’s lead instrument used in place of vocals. It doesn’t lose any points in comparison to the original. They both have their own energy.
We suggest adding this maxi single to your library and to also check out some of their other works. Lovebirds have a lot of range. They don’t produce instrumentals only.
